Keywords:
ABSTRACT
This quantitative descriptive exploratory study aimed at describing the reasons why adolescent women seek care in primary health care units. Data were collected in forms of the System of Ambulatory Information from the Brazilian Unified Health System from 2007 and 2008. It meant 6888 appointments; 1037 (15.05%) were adolescents from 10 to 14 years old. From this figure, 562 (54.19%) referred to sexual and reproductive health. Only 125 (22.24%) sought sexual health prevention; the other issues referred to pregnancy, delivery, puerperium or gynecological problems. The conclusion is that adolescents seldom go to primary health care units. Changing such reality means that all opportunities must be taken. Regardless the reason for the appointment, focus should be on sexual health and on the explanation of the youngsters’ rights, which are ethically and legally assured, since this issueis usually faced by the family and health professionals when pregnancy is or may be involved.
