Revisão integrativa da produção científica de enfermeiros acerca de erros com medicamentos [Integrative review of scientific production by nurses on medicationerrors]
Keywords:
ABSTRACT
This study, conducted in December 2010, aimed to identify characteristics of publications by nurses on medication errors. It was an integrative literature review using the descriptors “nursing” and “medication errors” covering the period 2000 to 2010. The data were collected from the Science Direct/Elsevier, Scopus, Ovid-Text and National Library of Medicine data bases. The results showed three categories: “type and frequency of errors”, “causes and underreporting of errors”, and “barriers to improving safety”. Error rates ranged from 14.8% to 56.7%, the prevailing error being in administration. Causes of error mentioned included distraction, poor knowledge, and overwork. The barriers tested were education, hard technologies, and the nurses’ apron. Advances were observed in studies testing barriers, and gaps were evident in studies addressing pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic aspects of drugs involved in errors.
