Objective: to discuss the available evidence on the use of ultrasound in the implantation / maintenance of peripherally inserted central venous catheters in the critical neonate. Method: scoping review, based on recommendations of experts from the Joanna Briggs Institute. To identify the research question, the PCC - population, concept and context - was followed. The research was carried out between January and March 2020, in three databases and Google Scholar. Results: a sample of 15 articles, published in several countries, between 2016 and 2020, in English and Portuguese, was obtained in the 354 publications found. Most showed the use of ultrasound point of care (POCUS) to choose the venous site or location of the catheter tip. Conclusion: further studies are needed, investigating the effectiveness of POCUS in the insertion / maintenance of an epicutaneous catheter in critical neonates, to support its adoption as the gold standard in this clientele. Handling by nurses is still incipient.
