Dando notícias difíceis à família da criança em situação grave ou em processo de terminalidade [Giving difficult news to families of children in serious condition or process of terminality]

Objetivou-se conhecer as vivências dos profissionais de enfermagem ao darem notícias difíceis à família da criança hospitalizada em situação grave ou em processo terminal. Realizou-se uma pesquisa qualitativa com nove profissionais da equipe de enfermagem de uma unidade de tratamento intensivo neonatal de um hospital universitário do sul do país, no segundo semestre de 2008. A coleta de dados foi realizada através de entrevistas semiestruturadas e os dados foram tratados pela técnica de análise temática, gerando três categorias: preferindo não ser o primeiro a dar a notícia; tendo dificuldade de comunicar-se com a família; rompendo a esperança através da comunicação da notícia difícil. Concluiu-se que desenvolver a habilidade de comunicar notícias difíceis de forma humanizada fortalece a família para o desempenho do seu papel de cuidadora.
ABSTRACT
The aim was to learn the experiences of nurses in communicating difficult news to families of hospitalized children in serious condition or process of terminality. This qualitative study of nine nursing professionals on the staff of a newborn intensive care unit was conducted at a university hospital in southern Brazil, in the second half of 2008. Data were collected by semi-structured interview, and analyzed using thematic analysis, which yielded three categories: preferring not be the first to give the news, having difficulty communicating with the family, and destroying hope by giving the difficult news. It was concluded that developing the ability to communicate difficult news humanely strengthens the family in its role as caregiver.

Se objetivó conocer las experiencias de los profesionales de enfermería para dar noticias difíciles a las familias de los niños hospitalizados en situación grave o en proceso terminal. Se realizó un estudio cualitativo con nueve profesionales de enfermería de una unidade de cuidado intensivo neonatal en el sur de Brasil, en el segundo semestre de 2008. Los datos fueron recolectados a través de entrevistas semiestructuradas y fueron tratados utilizando el análisis temático, generando tres categorías: prefiriendo no ser el primero a dar la noticia; teniendo dificultades para comunicarse con la familia; rompiendo la esperanza a través de las noticias difíciles. Se concluyó que el desarrollo de la habilidad de comunicar noticias difíciles de manera humanizada fortalece la familia para el desempeño de su papel de cuidadora.
