Consumo de álcool entre acadêmicos da área da saúde: implicações para a prática profissional [Alcohol consumption among academics in the health area: implications for professional practice]

RESUMO: Apresentam-se como objetivos: identificar o padrão de consumo de álcool entre acadêmicos da saúde e discutir suas implicações na prática profissional. Foram investigados 53 acadêmicos da saúde em universidade pública do Rio de Janeiro, em 2012, e os dados tratados por estatística descritiva. A amostra é, predominantemente, do sexo feminino, entre 19 e 22 anos de idade, sem companheiros ou filhos, de religião evangélica/protestante ou católica. Afirmam consumir álcool 51%, sendo identificados 86,8% na zona I (abstêmios ou baixo risco). Relacionado aos efeitos do álcool, sinalizam euforia, desinibição e diminuição da capacidade de raciocínio, chegando à dependência, acidentes de trânsito e alterações hepáticas/gástricas. Mencionam como fontes de informação sites da internet e diálogo com amigos, porém 11% citaram a faculdade/universidade como recurso. Assim, os acadêmicos precisam estar preparados para debater sobre a temática, aproximando-os dessa realidade e promovendo a reflexão e a mudança em futuras condutas individuais e profissionais.
ABSTRACT: This research aims to identify alcohol consumption patterns among biomedical academics and to discuss implications in their professional practice. Investigation included 53 academics in the health area from a public university in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil, in 2012 and data were analyzed on the basis of descriptive statistics. The sample is predominantly female, aging from 19 to 22 years, without partners or children, Evangelical/Protestant or Catholic. 51% reported using alcohol and 86.8% were identified in Zone I (abstainers or low risk). Signs of euphoria, increased outgoingness, and decreased thinking ability, reaching addiction, traffic accidents, and liver/gastric alterations were reported as side effects of alcohol. Internet sites and contact with friends were mentioned as sources of information, but 11% identified college networks. Thus, students must be prepared to discuss the topic, to approach that reality, and to have assistance in reflecting and changing their future individual and professional conduct.
RESUMEN: Se presentan como objetivos: identificar el patrón de consumo de alcohol entre estudiantes de la área biomédica y discutir sus implicaciones en la práctica profesional. Fueron investigados 53 estudiantes en universidad publica de Rio de Janeiro-Brasil, en 2012, y los datos tratados con estadística descriptiva. La muestra es predominantemente femenina, entre 19 y 22 años, sin pareja o niños, de religión evangélica/protestante o católica. Dicen consumir alcohol 51%, y 86,8% están en la Zona I (abstemios o bajo riesgo). Cuanto a los efectos del alcohol, presentan euforia, desinhibición, disminución de la capacidad de pensar, llegando a la adicción, accidentes de tráfico y alteraciones hepáticas/gástricas. Mencionan como fuentes de información los sitios de internet y el diálogo con los amigos, pero 11% citaron la universidad como un recurso. Por lo tanto, los estudiantes deben estar preparados para discutir el tema, acercándose de esta realidad y promoviendo la reflexión y el cambio en futuras conductas individuales y profesionales.
