Abstract

This article reports on a popular education experience conducted with a group of children and adolescents (9 to 13 years old) in the fifth year of elementary school at a public school on the outskirts of Belém do Pará, in 2024. The activity, entitled “Amazonian Legends and Philosophy with Children: Presenting the Legend of Cassava”, was conceived as a Concept Workshop (Silvio Gallo) in dialogue with Paulo Freire's dialogical method. Its main objective was the philosophical initiation of the participants through intercultural and decolonial teaching inspired by the notion of philosophical pathos and model childhood (Walter Kohan). The objectives of this interaction also include promoting teaching and learning based on dialogue; strengthening the regional culture perpetuated by the children; and developing notions of ethics and citizenship in the school and non-school environment. The choice of Amazonian legends as the central content was based on the children's interest and the absence of this theme in the school curriculum. The methodology used was action research with a qualitative approach, in line with Paulo Freire's dialogic method and Silvio Gallo's stages in the construction of a Concept Workshop. The study was also characterized as field and documentary research, analyzing the students' productions during the activities. As a result, the experience demonstrated the children's ability to create concepts, re-signify culture, broaden their socio-educational repertoires and participate in a classroom that is more pluralistic and open to social experiences and philosophical ideas.
