Brazil has a large volume of surface water sources along its extension. In addition to the quantity of water bodies, it has as a striking feature of high temperatures throughout the year. Another contributing factor is the inefficiency in basic sanitation, particularly in relation to the sewage collection system, which leads to the disposal of these pollutants into the springs, increasing the supply of nutrients and, consequently, widespread proliferation of cyanobacterias. Thus, the present study aimed to analyze the occurrence of cyanobacteria in the surface water sources of public supply in the State of Rio de Janeiro, in the corresponding period from 2015 to 2020. In order to verify the data provided by the service providers of the municipalities on the monitoring of water bodies, the standards and maximum values allowed by Consolidation Ordinance PRC Nº. 05/2017, Annex XX, of the Ministry of Health, were used as a reference. It was found that less than half of the municipalities conducted the required monitoring, with the majority failing to adhere to the stipulations of the Ordinance. The species that presented the highest occurrence in the surface water sources in the state of Rio de Janeiro was Aphanocapsa sp. Thus, it can be concluded that there is a need for Water Treatment Stations to reformulate and / or expand current treatment processes in order to remove cyanobacterias from public water supply. Additionally, in relation to municipalities, there is a crucial need for an intensified monitoring effort and dissemination of the monitored data.
