Diseases Related to Inadequate Environmental Sanitation (DRSAI) are one of the adversities faced worldwide by populations that lack these services. This study aimed at comparing the characteristics of the sanitation sector as well as its relationship with the population illness in relation to DRSAI, by conducting a case study in the city of Niterói (RJ), between 2014 and 2018. For this purpose, data were collected from the Hospital Information System, the National Sanitation Information System and the company Águas de Niterói. During the period evaluated, Niterói had 675 hospitalizations for DRSAI, an average of 135 per year, where there is a 22-23% drop trend in relation to the average number of hospitalizations in the last two years evaluated. According to the epidemiological profile of those affected by DRSAI in this period, it was found that 53.39% were male, while 46% were aged up to 9 years. Feco-oral transmission diseases were the most recurrent, accounting for 56% of hospitalizations. Fifty-eight deaths from DRSAI were observed in the period, with a predominance of the age group of ≥80 years. It was found that the reduction in the number of hospitalizations in recent years is directly related to improvements in sanitation services in the city of Niterói.
