Public universities, and with them the right to education, are in a critical situation in Argentina in the context of the budgetary adjustment that the government of the La Libertad Avanza (LLA) coalition, led by Javier Milei, is imposing on the entire national state. In this context, the LLA is an Argentine far-right political coalition that was formed in 2021 and led Javier Milei to win the presidential elections in 2023.
The aim of this article is to reflect on the current situation of emergency and crisis that the national public universities in Argentina are experiencing. To this end, we propose to review historical aspects of the way universities are organised and financed in Argentina, to characterise the current situation, to review some myths and truths that are part of the current debate on universities, and finally to share some reflections on the challenges facing the university community.
