Os estudos de fluxos representam um mecanismo de aferição do acesso à justiça através do acompanhamento do trâmite processual de determinado crime durante sua passagem pelas instâncias que compõe o Sistema de Justiça Criminal (SJC), observando como estes órgãos cumprem seus papéis, seja na investigação, na denunciação ou no processamento de delitos, sendo ferramenta essencial para visualização dos gargalos existentes durante o caminho percorrido por uma denúncia (notificação de crime), a partir da determinação de intervalos que podem considerar desde a instauração do procedimento pela autoridade policial até a fase de cumprimento de pena, além de propiciar uma análise da eficiência do próprio sistema, representando ainda um poderoso instrumento de avaliação de política pública. Para entender esse caminho percorrido por uma espécie delitiva, durante sua passagem pelas instâncias do Sistema de Justiça Criminal (Delegacia de Polícia, Ministério Pública, Poder Judiciário, Sistema Penitenciário), estudiosos das ciências sociais desenvolveram métodos de abordagens a fim de estabelecer diretrizes metodológicas a serem utilizadas durante a coleta de dados feita pelo pesquisador. É nesse ponto que se concentra o objetivo central deste trabalho, o qual consiste em ponderar acerca dessas premissas metodológicas usadas em estudos de fluxo do sistema da justiça criminal, visando oferecer parâmetros que sirvam para subsidiar pesquisas na área.
