Abstract

The theme of residency-based training, developed in doctoral research, originated from our Professional experience as a healthcare worker in a University Hospital in Rio de Janeiro and is based on a historical-critical conception that contrasts with competency-based training. In this article, we present the understanding that the training model studied is a particularity of human development and expresses the contradictions of education in times of neoliberalism, which seeks to train workers to meet the new trends of the flexible labor market based on competency-based pedagogy. We argue that this pedagogy finds fertile ground in the geriatric-gerontological field, which, based on positivist thought, translates into interventions guided by the “ideology of old age”; it is expressed in the area of health and in the training of residents.
