Resumo
O artigo consiste na revisão de duas obras paradigmáticas da criminologia crítica que analisam o surgimento e o estabelecimento da prisão como modalidade punitiva típica da modernidade: Punição e Estrutura Social, de Rusche e Kirchheimer, e Cárcere e Fábrica, de Melossi e Pavarini. Em específico, escrutina-se, à luz da teoria crítica do valor, o tipo de sustentação no marco teórico materialista sobre o qual elas se desenvolvem.

Abstract
The research consists of a review of two paradigmatic works of the critical criminology that analyze the emergence and establishing of the prison as typical punitive form of the modernity: Punishment and Social Structure, of Rusche and Kirchheimer, and The Prison and The Factory, of Melossi and Pavarini. In particular I investigate, in the light of the value criticism, the type of materialistic theoretical basis over which their arguments are developed.
