Based on data from empirical research with groups affected by the collapse of Vale's tailings dam in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais, which resulted in the deaths of 272 people, the text investigates how the Law acts in the production and normalisation of death on a large scale. Based on the theories of Judith Butler and Achille Mbembe, the study discusses the intersection between death, law, necropolitics and necroeconomics, highlighting the disposability and ‘invisibility’ of certain lives. The study analyses Vale's reaction and the response of the Brazilian judicial system, and proposes reflections on emerging legal alternatives, based on the demands of those affected for other forms of response that can allow them to mourn.
