Abstract

The practical activities commonly referred to as "experiments," despite being important tools for science education, can present barriers for individuals with visual impairments. This is mainly due to the visual nature of many of the phenomena involved, such as precipitation, color changes, gas release, etc. This article aims to share the development of an accessible educational resource using a multisensory approach for people with visual impairments. This resource consists of a six-episode podcast on experimentation, which utilizes principles of audio description to describe all the aspects, for instance, the setting, materials, and the phenomena investigated. In addition to discussing the production process, we also provide a grounded analysis of this material as a reflection on our own practice, resulting in our evaluation that the produced material has high inclusive potential. Beyond that, new challenges are presented, such as the need for strategies to also engage individuals with hearing impairments and collaborating with people with disabilities in the production of materials like this to ensure their protagonism.
