This article seeks to understand the dynamics of/in the city of Matola, based on the urbanization process, showing how its internal organization has taken shape over time. The article also explores population dynamics by neighbourhood and discusses the situation of urbanity indicators. To develop this reflection, we reviewed the literature on the city of Matola, seeking to understand how the occupation of urban space was engineered and, with that, to understand the internal organization of the city. To analyse population dynamics, we used data from the 1980, 1997, 2007, and 2017 censuses. The analysis of urbanity indicators is based on data from the 2017 census. The results show that the city's urbanization, linked to the dynamics of Maputo, has conditioned the type of socio-spatial arrangement characteristic of Mozambican cities, with implications for urbanity indicators. The differences in urbanity indicators do not align with the socio-spatial arrangements, as in the same neighbourhood, there are situations where urbanity indicators are close to those considered characteristic of Western cities, while at the same time, there are worrying levels of deprivation in access to basic social services. The neighbourhoods furthest from the urban area are the most deprived.
