The exemplum in Juvenal’s Satire 3: rhetoric, morality, and ethos

Abstract

This paper examines the use of exempla in Juvenal Satire 3, highlighting how this rhetorical device is instrumentalized by the poet in the construction of his satirical outlook on the city of Rome. It is argued that Juvenal employs exempla with considerable flexibility, drawing both on well-established historical precedents and on contemporary or fictional figures, to strengthen his argument. By juxtaposing negative exempla, illustrating the corrupted reality of his own times, and virtuous exempla, in general from the past, Juvenal constructs a conservative ethos that contrasts an idealized former age with his own present, perceived as decadent and morally degraded.

Leni Ribeiro Leite nasceu e foi criada no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. É bacharel e licenciada em Língua e Literatura Portuguesa e em Língua e Literatura Latina pela Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ); possui também mestrado e doutorado em Estudos Clássicos, ambos pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Desenvolve pesquisas e publica na área de Estudos Clássicos, com interesse na poesia da era flaviana, nas relações entre poética e retórica e nas recepções da Antiguidade. Atuou como professora assistente e associada de Língua e Literatura Latina na Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo entre 2009 e 2021. Atualmente, é professora associada de Estudos Clássicos na University of Kentucky.
