A corner narrative: "Os sonhos não envelhecem", by Márcio Borges

Abstract

In 1996, Márcio Borges published Os sonhos não envelhecem: Histórias do Clube da Esquina, that tell the story of the musical movement that emerged in Minas Gerais in the 1960s and developed over the following decade. The book belongs to a hybrid textual genre, at the limit between autobiography, memories, the novel of formation and the generational novel. The preface, by Caetano Veloso, thinks about the insertion of Clube da Esquina in the history of popular song in Brazil. The purpose of this article is to analyze Borges' book, in its formal and contextual aspects, the narrative he proposes about Brazilian culture of the period, the relationship established between memorial work and song work and, finally, the relationship between his story and the preface by the artist-thinker of musical tropicalism.
