Civil-military dictatorship and authoritarian legality
Military Justice and the institutionalization of political repression in Piauí (1964-1972)

This article analyzes the dynamics of the Civil-Military Coup in the state of Piauí and the political repression initiated by "Operation Cleanup" in April 1964. This study follows the arrests, police investigations, and proceedings instituted by the Military Court against left-wing activists, peasants, urban workers, and students in the state of Piauí between 1964 and 1972. It also examines local sources, interviews with political prisoners, the military court proceedings heard by the 10th Military Judicial District and their respective appeal to the Superior Military Court, and the institutional acts, laws, and decrees of the Civil-Military Dictatorship. These sources are approached using methodologies related to studies of the press, memory, and judicial proceedings. As a theoretical framework, in order to think about the theme, the concepts of National Security State and Authoritarian Legality, developed respectively by Maria Helena Moreira Alves and Anthony Pereira, are used, as well as the reflections of historians Carlos Fico, Rodrigo Patto Sá Motta and Jorge Ferreira on the Civil-Military Dictatorship.
