Abstract

The urban reform of Mayor Pereira Passos sought to operate an urban redesign of the city that seek to integrate the population of Rio de Janeiro to a regenerated urban space, stationed mainly in its central region, so that it could be developed a pedagogy of civilization for their citizens, since the idea of civilization was its fundamental value. This broad urban reform was based on an urban perspective of organicist and culturalist nature, and on a strong regulatory impetus uses of urban space. These strategies for setting up the thought that as a civilized city, brought itself both a persuasive rhetoric as well as an ordering constraint in order to produce a new model of relationship between the carioca and the city.
