Abstract

This paper discusses the specific character that the idea of progress Brazil has made in the last decades of the monarchic period, and its overlap with the notion of civilization. In Brazil in this period, unlike the major European countries, the idea of progress had not posted its epicenter in the notion of material development, but on the idea of advancement of a civilization
