ABSTRACT
The study aimed to assess nursing students’ knowledge of Burnout Syndrome, and to promote an educational program in this respect. To that end, a qualitative and quantitative study, mediated by the action-research methodology using participatory observation and a questionnaire, was conducted at a public university in São Paulo, from November 2009 to July 2010. Data was analyzed by categorization, which resulted in guiding themes for the educational program. The participants were 29 4th year undergraduate students, mostly women, between 20 and 25 years old, and unmarried. Of these, 9(31%) were unaware of the syndrome, 19(65%) knew of it, but 4(21%) did not remember and 3(15,8%) were wrong. The knowledge that these future health nursing/teaching professionals will be liable to stress, fatigue and physical discomfort underlines the need for an educational program to enable them to identify this syndrome properly and seek appropriate care for its prevention, control and early treatment.
