Objective: To identify the risk factors for ventilator-associated pneumonia and the perception, knowledge, and adherence of nursing staff to the prevention protocol actions. Method: Cross-sectional, quantitative study, carried out by auditing medical records and applying a questionnaire, with the participation of 100 technicians and 50 nurses from six intensive care units. Chi-Square and Odds Ratio tests were applied. Results: The risk factors were: age over 60 years and need for reintubation. Only 34% of the technicians and 54% of the nurses were able to recognize all the related good practices; however, completion and adherence were total. Conclusion: Advanced age and the need for reintubation were risk factors. There was a perception that the protocol is effective in prevention, with positive indicators in all units. However, theoretical weakness was found, since the majority did not recognize all the actions and their importance in mitigating this event.Published
