Nalva Pereira Caldas' layers in the written press (1961-2007)

Objective: to discuss Nalva Pereira Caldas' biographical layers by analyzing the written press. Method: a documentary research study with emphasis on micro-analysis. The sources came from the written press, with the analyses performed by means of data triangulation and categorized into the biographee's public layers. Results: a total of 37 records were identified, which gave rise to five layers, namely: “Public Layer in Teaching and Hospital Management”; “Public Layer in Representation Instances and Courses”; “Public Layer in Professional Fashion”; “Public Layer in her Private Life”; and “Public Layer in her Associative Life”. This analysis of Nalva Pereira Caldas' biography allowed evidencing her performance, especially as member of the hospitals' boards and in the changes implemented in professional fashion at the Pedro Ernesto Hospital. Final considerations: understanding these elements in Nalva Pereira Caldas' biography with interconnections across the different layers of her life reinforces her legacy for the history of Brazilian Nursing.
