Associated factors with nursing practices related to peripheral intravenous catheters in pediatrics: a cross-sectional study

Objective: to verify factors influencing nursing team care practices related to peripheral intravenous catheter assessment, infection prevention, and complication assessment during medication administration. Method: cross-sectional, analytical study. The sample consisted of 360 observations of intravenous medication administrations through peripheral intravenous catheters in a Pediatric Inpatient Unit. Descriptive analysis was performed, and risk ratios with 95% Confidence Intervals were calculated. A p-value ≤0.05 was considered significant. Results: adherence to catheter-related practices varied. However, only hand hygiene showed a statistically significant difference. Professionals with >20 years since graduation (94.2% adherence), additional training (92.1%), and ≥10 years of experience in the unit (93.8%) showed greater adherence to hand hygiene, with statistically relevant results (p <0.05). Conclusion: weaknesses related to catheter necessity assessment, proper disinfection performance, and complication assessment were identified.
