Objective: to analyze the social representation of chronic kidney disease among patients living with the condition and its implications for quality of life. Method: a descriptive, qualitative study guided by the Social Representation Theory, conducted in the nephrology unit of a university hospital in Rio de Janeiro between March and May 2024. Data collection involved a characterization form and semi-structured interviews. Data analysis was performed using spreadsheet software and content analysis through lexical techniques, supported by Iramuteq®. Results: twenty patients undergoing hemodialysis and conservative treatments participated. They highlighted the implications for daily life and quality of life, as well as the support systems that aid in coping with the diagnosis and treatment choices. Final considerations: the findings revealed not only the challenges arising from the diagnosis of an incurable chronic disease but also the strain of treatment and the impacts of disease chronicity.
