Percepção de mulheres casadas sobre o risco de infecção pelo hiv e o comportamento preventivo [Married women’s perceptions of hiv infection risk and preventive behavior]
Keywords:
ABSTRACT
In view of the feminization of the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), this quanti-qualitative study aimed to identify married women’s perceptions of the risk of infection with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and related preventive behavior. The participants were 60 women users of a primary health care facility in Santa Cruz, Rio Grande do Norte. Data were collected through semi-structured interview between June and October 2010, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The analysis revealed three categories: transmission of HIV/AIDS, vulnerability to HIV/AIDS and prevention of HIV/AIDS, with discourse demonstrating that gender relations are evident in marital and sexual issues, and contribute to women’s submission to their partners. The gaps in the interviewees’ knowledge of the forms of HIV/AIDS contamination and prevention contribute to increasing the riskof such infection occurring.
