Abstract

Since the end of World War I, the idea that women shoulddevote themselves exclusively to household tasks, including theroles of housewives and mothers, became strong. Women shouldfully devote themselves to taking caring of home and children.Although not adopted by the entire population, the ideal family, encouraged by the ruling classes, became the parameter. Now,matters relating to private environments raise a discussion onissues such as gender, social classes, clothing, housing and food. These aspects take place within households, where in the firsthalf of the twentieth century women had greater responsibilityand functions. As a proposal for this work, the examinationof historical sources was chosen, namely, the “Let us preparedelicacies” columns in the women’s magazine Jornal das Moças inthe 1950s, during which the family pattern was the “sweet home,”where family members were under the protection of the house, aspace where women should reign as sovereigns, housewives andmothers. The aim was to demonstrate the potential of the sourcesin order to instigate reflections on the historical and culturalconstruction of food standards and understand these patternsin relation to women’s role in this period.
