Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that mainly affectsadolescents and young women. Although the disease is alwaysassociated with body and food when it is addressed, because itis conceived as a psychiatric disorder, the way it is understoodis often limited to the field of mental health. The objectveof this ethnographic study with adolescents in treatment foranorexia nervosa in a benchmark public health service in thecity of Rio de Janeiro is to describe the daily operations of theinstitution and demonstrate how knowledge of the disease can bebroadened by other disciplinary viewpoints and by adolescentsthemselves. This paper presents a first approach to the field andadolescents surveyed. It also deals with the construction of thefield of research and the “conversion” of the nutritionist into ananthropologist. Such a conversion was needed, among otherreasons, to identify the tension within the seelcted health serviceamong health professionals, families and adolescents.
