The Kariri-xocó group is composed by two family groups from theethnicities Kariri from Ceará, Xocó, from Ilha de São Pedro-SE andFulni-ô, from Águas Belas-PE. This article aims to describe theirfood practices problematizing their food sustainability, as wellas their insertion in the local consumer market since the groupfoundation in Lauro de Freitas-BA. The methodology adoptedwas participative observation during the period of Septemberto December 2012, covering aspects related to production, acquisition, food preparation and distribution of food within thefamily. Data suggest that their production is insufficient for theirfood needs, with manufactured products being combined withlocal fruit. The financial resources for buying food derive fromthe minimum salary earned by one of the inhabitants through theBolsa Familia program, donations and sales of craft products. Thechange of location to the indigenous reserve Thá-Fene, in Laurode Freitas, was in search for better living conditions; However, water resources seem to be insufficient for self-sustainability. Theexcessive consumption of manufactured products instead of localfruit is the biggest change for the group. Changes in food habitshave been occurring to indigenous populations in general, withrepercussion in several areas of communal living, such as thedecrease of self-sustainability and the increasing dependenceon local food markets.
