Abstract

In contemporary literary production, preferably aimed at children and young people, there is a significant appreciation of the material component of books. The book is no longer considered merely a simple support and its material components – cover, paper weight, texture, typography, colors, layout, among others – take on narrative potential, revealing themselves not as a neutral carrier of content, but as an object that dialogues with it. This article is dedicated to this issue. We aim, from reading O menino no sapatinho, by Mia Couto, with illustrations by Danuta Wojciechowska, and graphic design by Joana Paz and Danuta Wojciechowska, to demonstrate how the confluence of the triad of languages – verbal text, illustration and graphic design – expands the meanings raised by the literary text, demanding a synergistic reading of the compositional languages of the book-object and contributing to the construction of a repertoire that is not only literary, but also visual and graphic.
