Abstract

The aim of this paper is to (i) describe the marked topic constructions in the school essays of elementary school students; (ii) reflect on the relationship between the marked topic constructions of Brazilian Portuguese and the perceived literacy level of students of the middle school. These derivations can be divided according to their structures: (i) there is a movement of the syntactic constituent (cf. RAPOSO et alli, 2014) - as in topicalization, topic-subject and antitopic; (ii) there is a duplication, or copy of the topicalized term that takes place in the left margin - left shift (cf. NICOLAU DE PAULA, 2012); (iii) there is a total break in the structure of the predication: anacoluth or pending topic. We argue that the different topic-marking strategies in the school essay genre show the student's lower or higher perception of textual organization strategies, which, by hypothesis, would show
their level of literacy. The methodology is qualitative and quantitative, using the Goldvarb-X (SANKOFF, TAGLIAMONTE and SMITH, 2005) and based on the Textual Linguistic (KOCH, 1992; MARCUSCHI, 1997) and Minimalist Program (CHOMSKY, 1995). The results show that: (i) public school students make greater use of strategies with syntactic breaks; (ii) throughout their schooling, students have difficulty perceiving the relationship between marked topic constructions and the linearization of syntactic periods.
