A História da Zoologia no Japão no Período Edo: das Pinturas de Artistas Japoneses aos relatos de Engelbert Kaempfer e Philipp von Siebold

O objetivo deste trabalho é retratar a História Natural do Japão do Período Edo (1603-1867), com base nos relatos de naturalistas viajantes (Engelbert Kaempfer e Philipp von Siebold), além de pinturas e ménageries dos daimiôs. O período Edo foi considerado um dos mais importantes, depois da restauração Meiji. Era caracterizado pelo xogunato, tendo um chefe militar samurai no comando, sendo o principal xogum Tokugawa Ieyasu. Neste período diversos animais foram levados para o Japão, como: tigres, avestruzes, camelos e pavões. Muitos destes eram presentes de imperadores, ou aquisições dos xoguns. Diversas pinturas retrataram a fauna do Japão, com destaque para as pinturas do samurai Myamoto Musashi, e Utagawa Kinyoshi. Destacam-se também os relatos de naturalistas alemães, como Engelbert Kaempfer e Phillip von Sielbold, que retrataram diversos animais endêmicos do Japão, como o tanuki, salamandra do Japão e o macaco japonês. Tratam-se de importantes relatos, uma vez que revelaram uma fauna, até então, pouco conhecida no país.
