The use of artificial intelligence has become an emerging phenomenon due to recent technological developments. For this reason, and considering the potential of this technology, we seek in this article to explore and understand the opportunities and challenges associated with the use of artificial intelligence in higher education, based on literature review research using a qualitative methodology. The results point to various opportunities and several challenges related to the use of artificial intelligence in higher education. Here we highlight a more suitable and accessible education, the enrichment of the teaching-learning process, the need to allocate efforts to ensure responsible, sustainable, and fair implementation of artificial intelligence, and the need for training and capacity building for the possibilities of using artificial intelligence in education. This work also presents theoretical considerations and reflections with the aim of contributing to the discussion on the use of artificial intelligence in education.
