In this work, the criminological theories of crime prevention related to the Chicago School are discussed, in order to demonstrate how the environment in which a community is inserted affects local crime, focusing on the primary prevention front. The general objective of this study is to analyze how space (physical and social) affects crime rates, especially Violent and Intentional Lethal and Intentional Crimes (CVLI's), explained by criminological theories associated with the Chicago School present in public policies on urban security in Brazil. municipality of Teresina (PI), in the region of Lagoas do Norte. It presents itself as specific objectives: to carry out a bibliographic balance of criminological theories on safe urban spaces; to describe the dynamics of CVLI's in the region of Lagoas do Norte in the municipality of Teresina (Piauí) from 2013 to 2020; to investigate the actions proposed for the control of urban crime in the Vila Bairro Segurança program by the Teresina City Hall (PI). The methodology used consists of the inductive method, in bibliographical research, of the quantitative-qualitative type, and collection of indirect documentary information, in official documents of the municipal secretariats of Teresina (Piauí). The criminological theories about safe spaces have been proven in practice with the decrease in crime and an increase in the sense of security in the region of Lagoas do Norte.
