Abstract

This review analyzes the book Envelhecimento na perspectiva da Gerontologia Social Crítica, by Solange Maria Teixeira, highlighting its contribution to understanding aging as a historical, social, and multidimensional phenomenon. The author criticizes biologicist and positivist approaches that naturalize old age and ignore factors such as social class, race, and gender. Grounded in historical-dialectical materialism, the work proposes a critical analysis of aging within capitalist society, emphasizing inequalities that particularly affect the working class. The book also discusses the role of public policies and care for older adults, while engaging with authors such as Simone de Beauvoir and Maria Cecília de Souza Minayo.
