About the Journal

Focus and Scope

The journal Em Pauta: teoria social e realidade contemporânea is a vehicle for scientific dissemination of the Faculty of Social Work of UERJ, and since its 19th issue, presents a new editorial and graphic project, consistent with international academic and editorial standards required for indexing of scientific journals. The journal has 43 issues published and is part of the CAPES QUALIS program with an A2 rating in the Social Work area at national level. The journal's themes of publication gravitate around the areas of concentration of the Graduate Program in Social Work (Master and Doctorate): Social Politics and Work.

The Journal is a space for debate and dissemination of academic production resulting from scientific research, essays, reviews, translations and cultural expressions concerning social theory and contemporary reality. Simultaneously, it is a space for the exchange of ideas produced in different contexts and continents, in keeping with the primal nature of the university institution.

From this perspective, the journal Em Pauta affirms itself as an editorial vehicle deeply in tune with the social processes that add to the national, Latin American and international reality, and aware of its conjunctural developments. It endeavors to contribute to the promotion and diffusion of the collection of critical-theoretical interpretations about the current scenario from the perspective of the collective subjects that represent the interests of work, at the same time as it wishes to stimulate debate and controversy with other aspects of social thought.

By integrating with inseparably way theory and history, the Journal is part of the terrain of theoretical and practical-political resistance to the hegemony of big capital, prevailing on the world stage and particular expressions in the country and the Latin American continent.

In a long cycle of depressive tone in the world economy, the burden of which is predominantly on the peripheral countries - and within them on the working class as a whole - there is a wide resizing of the functions of the state in the service of the interests of the large industrial groups. and finance. That hegemony has resulted in the radicalization and criminalization of the social issue, with its entourage of inequalities, violence and claims of resistance. The dismantling of universal public policies, the restriction of employment and the corresponding increase in unemployment are witnessed. Coupled with this scenario are the devastating destruction of the environment, the violation of human rights and the destitution of labor rights conquered throughout history through collective struggles of men and women in defense of their livelihoods, work and of political and cultural expression. These are some of the dilemmas, unpublished or metamorphosing into new, larger historical forms that defy critical reason.

This is the socio-historical terrain in which Social Work is nowadays, which encourages it to engage in a broad dialogue with the productions made in its academic field. But also, in an inter or multidisciplinary perspective, with those coming from related areas, which have as a framework the classic and contemporary social thinking for the critical reading of macrosocietary processes and their particular features linked to the subjects that give them life.

The Journal of the FSS / UERJ, therefore, constitutes a space for the exchange of ideas and criticism produced in various contexts and continents, as well as being a channel for debate and dialogue about the foundations, experiences and demands of the profession. Therefore, the Journal's focus is on the understanding of sociocultural determinations and contradictions that involve the political sphere and the world of work, especially the social struggles in Brazil and the Hispanic-American countries, in their struggles for public policies, freedom and democracy. These are struggles and processes that certainly circumscribe the profession in Latin America and require theoretical, political, ethical and new forms of intervention.

THEMATIC DOSSIER: Women’s Movement, Feminisms and Gender Studies

Editors: Carla Almeida (UERJ), Rita Freitas (UFF), and Ana Lole (PUC-Rio)

PROGRAM

This Dossier’s call for papers, with the theme of Women’s Movement, Feminisms and Gender Studies, aims to bring together articles that give visibility to untold stories and encourage revisiting consecrated narratives around women’s social participation and gender dynamics in different fields of study. The history of women arose precisely to highlight both these subjects and also a different perspective of history where the so-called small events, daily life, and other social agents gain an important dimension of analysis. And in this sense, it is essential to highlight women, especially black, indigenous, and rural and poor working women as the “other” in an official history that does not contemplate them. Pollak (1989) points out that “by privileging the analysis of the excluded, marginalized, and minorities, oral history has stressed the importance of underground memories which, as an integral part of minority and dominated cultures, oppose ‘Official Memory’.” In this sense, we see this as fundamental from a feminist epistemology. That is, we work from the perspective of rescuing women as historical subjects in their intersectional dimension, denying the neutrality of science.

The stories about feminisms in Brazil are marked by records of European influence, being classified in terms of “waves” that characterized specific moments of feminist struggles around the world. This narrative has been questioned, encouraging readings that focus and depart from regional experiences. On the other hand, for contemporary feminisms, the theme of globalization will be fundamental to articulate not only feminist theories in the world but also strategies of social struggles and their rejuvenation. In this issue, we welcome studies that contribute to the approximation of the diversity of experiences in women’s/feminist associations, movements, and organizations in Brazil and other regions of the world, especially Latin America. Studies that recuperate the silenced stories of many women.

THEMATIC DOSSIER: Ethnic-Racial Issue and Anti-Racism

PROGRAM

The publication of the thematic dossier entitled Ethnic-Racial Issue and Anti-Racism aims to stimulate the production of scientific articles and promote the dissemination of research and studies relevant to Brazilian public life, related to the field of ethnic-racial relations, racism, and social inequalities maintained by race/ethnicity, gender, and class hierarchies. These hierarchies structure social relations in capitalism and are the hegemonic social form in the West, particularly in the Americas. In Brazil, more than half of self-declared black, brown, and indigenous people has the worst social indicators compared to the self-reported white population. This condition requires the contextualization of racism as a structural issue of social relations, and the dissemination of knowledge that critically analyze its historical origins is urgent. The increase of publications in social work on anti-racism is a challenge for undergraduate  and graduate courses in social work, and matches the agenda of the entities in the field regarding professional training and practice. In these times of attacks on rights, resurgence of conservatism, and state counterreformation in Brazil in defense of the interests of capital, structural racism and related prejudices gain new features by acting to maintain "order" through the maintenance of privileges and naturalization of relations of domination/oppression of the working class, in particular of the black-indigenous population segments. Following this line of thought, this dossier will focus on research and studies that will give central focus to the structural and institutional character of racism in Brazilian social formation in a critical perspective and its intersections with other markers of difference in the production of historical inequalities, social struggles, and the contribution of social workers and other areas of knowledge in their struggle through public policies.

THEMATIC DOSSIERPublic university and training of social workers in times of counterreformation

SUMMARY

The publication of the thematic dossier Public university and training of social workers in times of counterreformation aims to promote the publication of articles that, based on theoretical and/or empirical research, problematize the transformation of higher education, both in undergraduate and postgraduate courses, taking into consideration a double-articulated movement: the current private higher education market and public policies of counter-education. The present call for papers also aims to publish articles that analyze the changes in work conditions and relations in teaching jobs, and the current and future challenges of both the public university and the professional training in social work, due to the transformation of the public university in an “operational university” (Chaui, 1999) and the expansion of private higher education in Brazil, especially non-presential education.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: October 1, 2018 to March 15, 2019.

THEMATIC DOSSIERThe Family and Social Policies

SUMMARY

This issue intends to discuss the family in the context of contemporary social policies, highlighting the dilemmas related to their responsibility in the provision of social welfare. It aims to discuss important issues that include changes of and in families, the relationship with work, and ways of incorporating them into social welfare systems. It seeks to present research results that problematize the current consequences of “familism” in the field of social work and within families, such as the reproduction of gender and race/ethnicity inequalities, the lack of care for its members, and the different expressions of conflicts inherent to it. Families are not homogeneous in resources, stages of the life cycle, cultural forms, and level of interaction with the whole of legislation and social policies. In this sense, it is also necessary to add studies that address working with families in various social policies. The predominant nature of the debates raised is the rupture with functionalist approaches to family in favor of its historicity, inscribed in the process of reproduction of social relations. In this regard, it is of interest to several areas of knowledge and professional fields that seek the intellectual production of Social Work as an important source for working with families in their articulation with social policies.
