Abstract
In a dialogue with contemporary theories of democracy, Seyla Benhabib proposes a debate on the idea of just membership to a political community. From a normative perspective, Benhabib questions the definition of who would be the members of a political community and what are the moral judgment criteria that the so-called liberal democracies have used to define who are their citizens. The result of Benhabib’s work seems relevant to offer a theoretical basis for the reception of asylum seekers, refugees and stateless persons, while serving as the synthesis of a liberal cosmopolitanism model. This paper intends to approach Benhabib’s central arguments, for, in a second movement, discuss them critically.
Key words: cosmopolitism; hospitality; citizenship; asylum; statelessness.Downloads
