Abstract
Humor is an effective way of criticizing either representatives or government, and tolerance of the chiefs of state towards political satire is an accurate thermometer to measure the real freedom to which the public sphere is entitled. Departing from these premises, the article analyses cartoons and humoristic texts published in a satirical magazine from Rio de Janeiro, in order to compare the reactions triggered by them in the Brazilian Monarchy and Republic during the late 19th century.
Keywords: freedom of the press; satire; tolerance.
