The disaster in Rio Grande do Sul proves that we are already experiencing the effects of the climate collapse produced by capitalism. The gravity of these events jeopardizes the future of humanity on Earth and places us at a historical crossroads. In light of this, we defend the importance of insurgencies and struggles for socio-environmental justice, the recognition that we are in a State of Climate Emergency, and that we need to hold large transnational agro-hydro-mining-business corporations accountable for GHG emissions and the violation of Human Rights, Ecosystem Services, and Cultural Rights in Brazil.

Emiliano Maldonado, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul; Instituto de Pesquisa, Direitos e Movimentos Sociais IPDMS

Emiliano Maldonado é professor da Faculdade de Direito da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande Sul (UFRGS). Possui doutorado em Direito, Política e Sociedade no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Direito da Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC). Mestre em Teoria, História e Filosofia do Direito pela UFSC. Pesquisador do Instituto de Pesquisa em Direitos e Movimentos Sociais - IPDMS. Membro da Rede Nacional de Advogadas e Advogados Populares (RENAP). Atualmente faz parte da coordenação do Comitê de Combate à Megamineração no Rio Grande do Sul (CCM/RS) e da Campanha Permanente Contra os Agrotóxicos e pela Vida.
