DOI: 10.12957/periferia.2014.17274O artigo discute o momento de falecimento do sacerdote de Candomblé Joãozinho da Goméia, que se tornou personagem célebre no Brasil entre os anos 1940 e 1970. Seu João era baiano de Inhambupe mas construiu sua trajetória pública no estado do Rio de Janeiro, na Baixada Fluminense. Após sua morte, seu nome esteve envolto em um processo de disputa de memória e esquecimento na cidade de Caxias que ganha novos contornos com o passar do tempo.
