Systematically, speakers mark, grammatically, calculations about what they believe to
be the expectations of the listeners regarding the world. In this article, we analyze this
phenomenon, first from the perspective of informational structure. We argue that the
evocation of the expectation calculation occurs through presupposition. Thus, we argue
that, beyond the presuppositions of topicality, awareness, and knowledge, there should
be a presupposition of expectation, which is not in Lambrecht's typology (1994). To
explore the difference between knowledge and expectation, we also conduct an analysis
of idealized cognitive models from Cognitive Grammar (LANGACKER, 1991),
demonstrating that these are cognitively distinct phenomena.
