Working with spelling in the 4th and 5th grade textbooks: considerations in the light of sociolinguistics

The present study presents an analysis from the perspective of sociolinguistics of the approach to work with the spelling of two textbooks for the Initial Series of Elementary School. Reflections are made on sociolinguistics, the analysis and diagnosis of errors and didactic manuals. We aimed to: i) verify whether there are, in the pedagogical supplement of the teacher's manual, specific guidelines for working with spelling that consider orality; (ii) evaluate chapters and activities that focus on spelling conventions and; (iii) propose adjustments or comments to the teacher's manual and book chapters, which consider the sociolinguistic model of error analysis and diagnosis. The investigated books promote reflections on the influences of orality in the acquisition of spelling conventions and on the arbitrariness of the writing system.
