In 2019, Kapulana published the work Nervous Conditions (1988) by Tsitsi Dangarembga. In the translator's note, the nature of the title is explained, derived from the preface "The status of ‘native’ is a nervous condition," written by Sartre for Frantz Fanon's The Wretched of the Earth (1961). The book begins the story of Tambudzai, which continues in The Book of Not (2006) and concludes with This Mournable Body (2018). In this article, I focus on analyzing how the formal education of the female characters Tambudzai, Nyasha, and Maiguru may be linked to a conception of the subaltern status of women in Zimbabwe between 1960 and 1970, the period in which the narrative of Nervous Conditions is set.
