This article analyzes the formation and evolution of the Brazilian tradition of cultural diplomacy from the late 19th century to the early 21st century. It argues that, given Brazil’s structural and material limitations, successive governments have relied on cultural promotion as a strategic pathway for international insertion, consolidating a recurring practice that gave rise to a cultural diplomacy with distinctive features shaped by the reality of a peripheral country. This is a historical and sociological qualitative research based on the analysis of secondary sources, drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic power as a driving force behind Brazilian cultural initiatives. In this regard, the study identifies the main historical milestones, motivations, and mechanisms of this trajectory, demonstrating that, despite discontinuities, there is a continuous thread that shapes a unique tradition.
