Feminine (in)submission to male censorship: critical reading and translation of two short stories by Emilia Pardo Bazán

Abstract

Translating to 21st century’s Brazilian Portuguese the short stories “El encaje roto” and “La resucitada”, by feminist writer Emilia Pardo Bazán, who worked between the 19th and 20th centuries, enables us to identify the recurrence of authorial concernings and distincts characterization of woman/man relationship. Meanwhile the main character of “La resucitada” submits herself to her condition, the protagonist of “El encaje roto” produces a rupture in social expectations concerning ideal roles for a woman. These narratives are marked by elements of naturalism, realism, fantastic and tints of a romanticism that Pardo Bazán never abandoned. We translate the two texts considering the ethics of translation as proposed by Berman (2013), and the importance of translation as a labour responsible for opening spaces for women in the literary world and as a strategy of deconstructing patriarchally charged language.

Author Biographies

Maria Mirtis Caser, Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES)

Graduated in Portuguese-Spanish Literature from the Federal University of Espírito Santo, Master in Neo-Latin Literature and PhD in Neo-Latin Literature from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, with a sandwich internship at the University of Santiago de Compostela in 2008. She did a postdoctoral internship at the Universitá Ca Foscari in Venice in 2015. She is a professor of the Postgraduate Program in Literature - Federal University of Espírito Santo. She is a member of the ABH (Brazilian Association of Hispanists).

Rivana Zaché Bylaardt, Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES)

Bachelor's Degree in Portuguese and Spanish from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (2014). Master's degree from the Postgraduate Program in Literature from the Federal University of Espírito Santo (2018). Professor at the Instituto Federal do Espírito Santo, in addition to being Director of Research, Postgraduate Studies and Extension at the same institution. Her research mainly covers the following topics: translation and feminism.

Sérgio Wladimir Cazé dos Santos, Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA)

PhD in Literature (2021) from the Postgraduate Program in Literature (PPGL) of the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Ufes), with a master's degree in Literature also from PPGL-Ufes (2016) and a degree in Social Communication: Journalism from the Federal University of Bahia (1998). Currently an undergraduate student in the Spanish Letters course at UFBa. Experienced in the areas of Cultural Journalism and Letters, with an emphasis on Hispanic-American Literature and Brazilian Literature, working mainly in the following topics: poetry, narrative, literary translation.
