Agriculture, urban modernization and the entertainment sector in the old district of Carmo da Mata, Minas Gerais, 1900-1920

This paper explores the emergence of innovations in the entertainment field in the former district of Carmo da Mata, in the western region of Minas Gerais, in the first two decades of the 20th century. In more detail, a historical interpretation is presented in which the productive boosting of rural sectors is pointed out as the main explanatory element for the expansion of new modalities and regimes for occupying free time. As a method, we analyzed fragments of reports published in the Gazeta de Minas newspaper, which circulated in the city of Oliveira, the administrative seat of the municipality, combined with census documentation from the Minas Gerais government during this period.
