Abstract

O trabalho analisa como os afro-brasi­leiros (descendentes de africanos) foram afetados pelas novas estruturas políticas e pela ideologia adotadas pelas elites políticas do século XIX.  Durante o Im­pério, o Brasil apresentava uma tensão entre a ideologia do liberalismo e as an­tigas características de uma sociedade hierarquizada, onde os descendentes de africanos haviam construído certas for­mas de vida comunitária.  A consolida­ção de valores individuais permitiu a as­censão política e social de algumas per­sonalidades entre os afro-brasileiros, mas a maioria continuava excluída.  (Tradução Ana Maria Santos)
