The Women's Federation of the State of São Paulo and the Political Organization of Working-Class Women (1948-1953)

This article explores the role of the Women’s Federation of the State of São Paulo (Federação das Mulheres do Estado de São Paulo, FMESP) between 1948 and 1953, highlighting its political activities and the organization of women workers within the context between the “waves” of the feminist movement. Based on historical sources, such as documents from the Department of Political and Social Order (DOPS), the text examines the FMESP's strategies in advocating for women's rights and better living conditions, focusing on Black and low-income women workers. The FMESP addressed demands for wage equality, social assistance, and workplace reforms while enduring intense political repression. The analysis underscores the FMESP's significance as a platform for mobilization and the development of a broad and specific advocacy agenda, challenging the rigid historiographical division of feminism into “waves”. This article thus contributes to a more inclusive understanding of feminism's history in Brazil, highlighting the vital role of women workers' continuous efforts in the fight for their rights.
