Colonels and political violence in Southern Piauí in the early 20th century

The objective of this text is to analyze the political influence of the coronéis in southern Piauí at the beginning of the First Republic, with a focus on the actions of an influential local politician known as Coronel Fausto Lustosa. The main source for this analysis is the publications of the Piauí newspaper O Apóstolo, between the years 1907 and 1911. The analysis illustrates the dynamics of the coronéis actions in Piauí, where violence and corruption were common practices, contributing to the maintenance of a system of local domination. Thus, even in isolated regions, the coronéis exerted strong influence over politics, society, and the economy, frequently relying on alliances with state power and the use of violence to maintain their authority.
