“Mothers of yesterday and today”
the childcare discourse and women’s education in the pages of the newspapers A Notícia (1935–1937) and O Apóstolo (1937–1948)

This study proposes an analysis of the presence of the childcare discourse in the newspapers A Notícia (1935-1937) and O Apóstolo (1937-1948) in Santa Catarina, exploring the dissemination of this discourse by the press and the interaction between religion and childcare. The aim is to understand how these newspapers and the church contributed to spreading the medical discourse, investigating the similarities between the Catholic ideal of motherhood and that promoted by childcare. Women's magazines and newspapers played fundamental roles in propagating the childcare discourse, contributing to the construction of an ideal of motherhood. By analyzing the articles published in these periodicals, the research seeks to understand how the medical discourse shaped and silenced popular traditions, resulting in the emergence of the "scientist mother" figure. Additionally, it examines how the medical discourse disseminated in the Santa Catarina press aligned with religious precepts. This study aims not only to understand the influence of the childcare discourse on the formation of motherhood but also to shed light on the complex interaction between medicine, the press, and religion in shaping these ideals in the historical context analyzed.
